Resin Printing

Resin 3D Printing is the go to option if your parts require very fine detail or smooth surface finish. Resin printing material choices are more limited, but if you need very fine details and no layer lines then resin printing is the way to go.

Why use 3D printing to manufacture your parts?

There is a good chance you may have also heard terms such as Additive Manufacturing (AM), Additive Layer Manufacturing (ALM) or Rapid Prototyping. These terms and 3D printing all refer to technologies that allow making parts by adding material in layers to build up 3 dimensional part.

It is a great solution in a wide range of scenarios. From making custom parts for personal projects to manufacturing parts for consumer products.

Examples of where 3D printing is a great solution:

Disadvantages of 3D printing compared to other manufacturing technologies:

Material properties not as good as traditional manufacturing techniques (e.g. injection moulding)
Material variety not as wide as for traditional manufacturing techniques
For high volume manufacturing unit cost can be comparatively high

As with any manufacturing process it is important to design your parts so that they are optimised for that process. For example, 3D printing parts designed for injection moulding will usually result in worse performance. However, this can usually be overcome by designing the part for 3D printing process in mind. Same is true in reverse, where parts designed for 3D printing cannot usually be made at all using injection moulding without significant design changes.
